Sustainable Remote Working – Practical Tips

Our whole team is working remotely these days. Is it easy? Honestly, no. Although we have more than half of our staff working distantly anyway, for some of our active office-based consultants, it has been a challenge. We love our cosy office and our fun team. We are used to supporting each other and having the occasional giggle together to cope with problems. So, the verdict is that some team members find it more difficult to work from home efficiently than others. Plus it is much harder for management to keep the spirits high during these troublesome times.

Our whole team is working remotely these days. Is remote working easy? Honestly, no. Although we have more than half of our staff working distantly anyway, for some of our active office-based consultants, it has been a challenge. We love our cosy office and our fun team. We are used to supporting each other and having the occasional giggle together to cope with problems. So, the verdict is that some team members find it more difficult to work from home efficiently than others. Plus it is much harder for management to keep the spirits high during these troublesome times. But there are ways to improve the inevitable situation.

This is what we came up with and started to implement to improve our concentration and productivity:

Strategic approach – what we can do now so that we are prepared for whatever is coming next.

Zoom team meetings to keep us on track and maintain sense of belonging.

Action plan for a week adapted to the circumstances.

We also emphasise personal well-being and remind the colleagues:

To take regular breaks, stand up and walk every 1,5-2 hours.

To maintain water balance (a little tip – place a bottle/jar of water on your desk).

When feeling energy is low – move your body and stretch.

Try not to eat at the desk while working. Having a proper lunch break actually makes you work better afterwards.

To keep ourselves productive while working from home, we:

Have a plan for the day. What’s a priority and the must, leave more “automatic” tasks that don’t require too much concentration for after-lunch time or evening, when you are low in energy and can only do those without feeling guilty for less productive input. That will decrease frustration related to not being able to perform as good as in the morning-ish when the brain is active and you have the energy.

Work with a timer, when we need to focus on one important task. How-to: set a timer for 30-60mins, remove all the distractions and concentrate on what has to be done – bare in mind, it’s better to have a clear aim to keep you going = ask yourself what do you want to achieve in one hour time.

A sweet addition to our daily work-from-home routine:

Have flowers or plants on your desk.

Think about lighting a candle.

Use other fragrances to stimulate your senses.

We wish you to stay healthy, calm and keep doing what you love doing.
